The double star Alpha Centauri AB also appears in the image. Proxima b is a little more massive than the Earth and orbits in the habitable zone around Proxima Centauri, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on its surface. Credits: ESO/M. KornmesserNASA streamed a live press conference on its website Wednesday morning to inform the world of its discovery of not one, but seven Earth-sized planets that exist in a habitable zone around a single nearby star. The planets were observed by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope around a tiny, nearby, ultra-cool dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1, according to a NASA press release.Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.“This is the most exciting result I have seen in the 14 years of Spitzer operations,” said Sean Carey, manager of NASA’s Spitzer Science Center at Caltech/IPAC in Pasadena, “Spitzer will follow up in the fall to further refine our understanding of these planets so that the James Webb Space Telescope can follow up. More observations of the system are sure to reveal more secrets.”NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, manages the Spitzer Space Telescope mission for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. Science operations are conducted at the Spitzer Science Center at Caltech.A paper published in this week’s science journal Nature suggests that the six inner planets are located in the temperate zone, where the temperature at the surfaces of these planets could be between 0 and 100 degrees Celsius. In May 2016, Michaël Gillon and colleagues reported the detection of three exoplanets transiting an ultracool dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1, which is located 12 parsecs (about 39 light years) from the Sun, according to Nature.Motivated by this discovery, the authors conducted a monitoring campaign of the star from the ground and from space that allowed them to identify four additional planets in this system. Initial mass estimates suggest that the six inner planets have masses that are similar to the mass of Earth and probably have rocky compositions. At about 40 light-years (235 trillion miles) from Earth, the system of planets is relatively close to us, in the constellation Aquarius. Because they are located outside of our solar system, these planets are scientifically known as exoplanets.“This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “Answering the question ‘are we alone’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.”Following up on the Spitzer discovery, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has initiated the screening of four of the planets, including the three inside the habitable zone. These observations aim at assessing the presence of puffy, hydrogen-dominated atmospheres, typical for gaseous worlds like Neptune, around these planets.Spitzer, Hubble, and Kepler will help astronomers plan for follow-up studies using NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope, launching in 2018. Webb will be able to detect the chemical fingerprints of water, methane, oxygen, ozone, and other components of a planet’s atmosphere With much greater sensitivity.Webb also will analyze planets’ temperatures and surface pressures which are key factors in assessing their habitability, according to NASA.For more information about Spitzer, visit http://www.nasa.gov/spitzer.For more information on the TRAPPIST-1 system, visit https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/trappist1.For more information on exoplanets, visit http://www.nasa.gov/exoplanets. Only a handful of markets in which local teams are playing on CBS will be presented something other than the game in Pittsburgh. Narendra Modi government’s move to scrap VVIP culture of using red beacon (lal batti) atop cars, seems to have irked some Bihar ministers who attended the cabinet meeting helmed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday. One of the most vocal critic of Centre’s step to tone down the VVIP culture is Power Minister Bijendra Yadav, who has accused the prime minister of demolishing the federal structure in the country.”BJP is destroying the federal structure of the country. Whatever decision Centre has taken is not binding on us and state governments are under no obligation to follow them”, said Yadav.Though seemingly upset with the new order, minister Lallan Singh, Abdul Jalil Mastan and Ashok Chowdhary said they will respect the decision.”If the Centre has scrapped red beacons, we will also scrap it”, said Abdul Jalil Mastan, Excise Minister.Interestingly, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s car does not sport a red beacon and neither does Deputy CM Tejasvi Yadav’s.Also read: Is PM Modi’s red beacon surprise yet another citizen connect move? Bat Tricks GirlSoftball, as we all know, is a game of statistics. Here’s an impressive number for you. The below Vine, posted one day ago, has nearly 8 million loops. Why? Because it features an incredible softball bat trick. The girl’s name is Marisa Arriaga, and she hails from Cedar Hill, Texas. She posted the original video back in June, but it’s gone viral the past 24 hours. In the clip, she lifts a bat off of the ground with her foot, bounces it behind her back, kicks the ball off of the tee, juggles it, and then crushes it into the woods. It’s awesome.Bat tricks? pic.twitter.com/M2JqHXR08l— marisa (@marisa_arriaga) June 24, 2015Yeah, I can’t do that. Impressive, to say the least.
National Security Minister, Hon. Peter Bunting, says the Government remains committed to maintaining the island’s ports of entry at globally competitive standards.“We understand that for an airport to be globally competitive, it needs not just to be safe and secure and difficult to traffic contraband through, but it also has to be enjoyable for your clients, your customers, who are the passengers going through,”Mr. Bunting said while speaking at Wednesday’s (September 4) handing over ceremony for the newly refurbished Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) police station in Kingston.Mr. Bunting said initial meetings held with the Ministries of Tourism and Entertainment, and Transport, Works and Housing as well as the Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) yielded consensus of the need to ensure that the standards of the ports, particularly airports, “not only meet but exceed the expectations of the most discriminating visitors.” This, as “our airports (are) not competing locally, (but) globally.”He pointed out that the Ministry plays a “critical” role in ensuring that competitiveness in terms of immigration services, and security protocol. In this regard, he said, the Ministry undertook the re-engineering of outgoing immigration services, which, he contended, have been “very successful”.“The transit times have improved quite dramatically, and we have been able to re-deploy some of those immigration officers to the incoming immigration (section). I have now asked the Chief Executive Officer of the Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) to work on, if not eliminating, at least similarly re-engineering the incoming immigration and, hopefully, eliminating it for our nationals,” the Minister advised. In terms of security, Mr. Bunting said the Ministry and Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) continue to recruit police personnel “at good pace” for deployment to the island’s ports. This move, he notes, has among other things, resulted in an increase in the quantity of narcotics intercepted, and interdictions this year.“While it, on one hand, reflects the hard work of our team, I think, also, it reflects that there is increased activity by narcotics traffickers. This (narcotics trafficking) is one of the activities that threatens the normal operations of an airport (and) threatens the viability of some of your wholesale customers, like your airlines and your cargo handlers, etcetera. We are conscious that we have to re-double efforts, now, to ensure that these…facilities are not exploited for illicit means,” the Minister said.Against this background, Mr. Bunting gave the Ministry’s assurance and JCF’s commitment to continue cooperating to address such issues. He emphasised that technology will be pivotal in that endeavour, adding that “we can effectively use the technology to support the policing activities, not just in detection, but also in prevention.”Police Commissioner, Owen Ellington, who also spoke at the ceremony, advised that the JCF recently revamped the structure for its ports security portfolio.“(That area is) now under the command of a Senior Superintendent of Police, who is Mr. (Anthony) Powell, and he will have charge over all the subdivisions of the ports portfolio, which includes Norman Manley (airport) and the other ports around Jamaica,” Mr. Ellington informed. The facilities at the Norman Manley International Airport police station have been significantly improved following its renovation and expansion at a cost of approximately $23 million. The work, which was funded by Norman Manley International Airport Limited (NMIA)/Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ), included extensive refurbishing of offices, bathrooms, interview rooms, changing rooms for police officers, and the kitchen/canteen, among other areas. The project was undertaken in three phases over some 12 months. Former OSU women’s hockey coach Nate Handrahan.Credit: Lantern TVAfter just four seasons, Ohio State women’s hockey coach Nate Handrahan and one of his assistants has resigned. An OSU spokesman confirmed the resignation in an email to The Lantern Wednesday afternoon, as well as the resignation of Keith Maurice, who joined the program in May 2013.The spokesman did not provide a reason for the resignations. The OSU women’s hockey team went 67-64-15 in four seasons under Handrahan, including a 17-16-3 mark this season. In the 2012-2013 season, the Buckeyes posted a 19-win season, the second most in team history.Handrahan was just the second head coach in the 15-year history of the program.
Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann addresses the media prior to leading a team practice on Oct. 4, 2017 at the Schottenstein Center. Credit: Jacob Myers | Managing Editor for ContentOhio State men’s basketball head coach Chris Holtmann has not been a coach in the state of Ohio for even six months and he’s already trying to make plans for the state’s future in college basketball.Holtmann has twice previously broached the subject of introducing a Crossroads Classic-type event to the state of Ohio.Three years before Holtmann was promoted to head coach at Butler, former Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke helped create the Crossroads Classic, an event in Indianapolis between four of the state’s basketball powerhouses: Butler, Purdue, Indiana and Notre Dame. While Holtmann said the event is still “at best case scenario … a few years away from being the reality,” he said he’s made progress talking with the three other schools — Cincinnati, Xavier and Dayton — about the possibility.“I think the first thing is someone takes the idea and runs with it, and then kind of spearheads it and kind of pushes it,” Holtmann said Wednesday in a sit-down interview with The Lantern. “But there’s a lot that has to be done. You have to have obviously four schools that feel like it’s in their best interest and have an interest in doing it and we’re trying to broach that subject with them, but we’re just in the very early stages of those kind of conversations.”LANTERN EXCLUSIVE: OSU men’s basketball head coach @ChrisHoltmann speaks about the potential for a Crossroads Classic event for Ohio. pic.twitter.com/xIZTmN5oU7— Lantern TV (@LanternTV) October 26, 2017In Holtmann’s first year as head coach at Butler, his Bulldogs were ranked No. 23 when they were upset by Indiana on Dec. 20, 2014. Holtmann said that victory by the Hoosiers proved to be a signature win on the Hoosiers’ resume and that it helped propel them to an NCAA tournament berth. The following two seasons, his team was the underdog to No. 9 Purdue in 2015 when the Bulldogs were No. 17, and then again in 2016 to No. 9 Indiana when Butler was No. 18. They won both matches.Even as a ranked team, Butler was always considered an underdog against the other Power Five teams that were in the event. Now at Ohio State, the script would be flipped. The Buckeyes are the flagship school in Ohio, and would be considered the program to beat.Holtmann said whether favorite or underdog, powerhouse or up-and-comer, an all-Ohio event will provide value to any team that comes away with a win. “I think the reality is you have other programs in the state that have been really high-achieving programs,” Holtmann said. “I get why we haven’t played some of those schools in the past, but I also recognize that, I think perhaps if those programs were really struggling programs that wouldn’t be as beneficial for us. I don’t think that’d be in Ohio State’s best interest, but they’re programs that have had success and makes it mutually beneficial.”But before the idea behind the event can become a reality, there are several remaining obstacles left to hurdle for Holtmann.Big Ten teams currently have 18 conference games in their schedule, but a recent change in scheduling will now force teams to have 20 games against Big Ten opponents, leaving only 11 vacancies in the schedule for out-of-conference opponents. There is also the matter of clearing the notion with the other schools involved and figuring out who will play whom.“I think maybe in some ways a fan base may think, ‘Hey, just you can get it together, it’s great for everybody,’” Holtmann said. “But it’s a little more involved than that in the dates, and now we have an increased Big Ten schedule, which is a challenge in terms of finding nonconference games.”There will be plenty of incentive for all teams to get something like this scheduled. The Crossroads Classic drew plenty of excitement among the four programs’ fan bases. Over the past two seasons, Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis was filled beyond its listed capacity of 17,923 with 18,684 fans in 2016 and 19,156 in 2015. Last year, the event featured four ranked teams for the first time in Crossroads Classic history.Holtmann believes if the four aforementioned Ohio teams are able to work out a similar event, the same success will happen in the Buckeye state. “It’s great for the fans. It’s exciting for the fans,” Holtmann said. “It engages them in a way that that time of year when you’re thinking maybe about other things, you have NFL and you have college football, which are great, but it engages them on a Saturday that’s different than obviously conference play.”
Global sports broadcaster ESPN has promoted programming boss John Skipper to the position of president as long time boss George Bodenheimer becomes executive chairman.Bodenheimer is currently president of ESPN and ABC Sports and co-chair of Disney Media Networks and he will relinquish his day-to-day operating responsibilities as of January 1. He will continue to chair ESPN’s board of directors.Skipper, who has been executive vice president, content, since 2006, will report to Bodenheimer and The Walt Disney Company president and chief executive officer Bob Iger. Iger said: “George has said repeatedly that ESPN’s success has been led by its collaborative corporate culture and a deep bench of executive talent. While that remains true, it obviously and intentionally downplays his leadership and many significant contributions. We’ve focused on succession at all levels of Disney for some time now, and consistent with that approach, George initiated conversations last spring that led to today’s announcement.
