ATHLETICS NEWS: TIR CHONAILL AC JUVENILES HUGELY IMPRESSIVE AT MAGHERAFELT MEETING

first_imgTir Chonaill AC Athletics News:The Meadowbank Stadium in Magherafelt last weekend was a happy competitive arena for the clubs young athletes, coaches and supporters.The occasion was the annual Indoor Ulster /Athletics Northern Ireland c/ships held over two days for the Under 12 to 19 age groups. Club athletes battled their way onto the presentation podium at regular intervals and recorded numerous top class performances and PB’s. SaturdayEarly in the morning, Lucy McGlynn, from Ballyshannon finishes 2nd in the U12 60m heat -9.44secs and quaifies for the final. Niamh Mohan, Frosses, 2nd in her heat – 9.73secs – is just outside the eight athlete final placing. In the Girls U13 60m Amy Elliott, Ardara impresses with a 2nd place -9.28secs and automatic final qualification. Aisling Mohan, Frosses, and Tess Duke, Donegal Town,were just outside final qualification. Rian O’Murchu, Portnoo. Boys U12 wins his heat, 9.89secs and qualifies for the later final. Neighbour,Johnie McGonagle, was just outside a final placing. Derbhla O’Neill, Killybegs, GU14 performed well. Boys U15, Iarla O’Murchu. Portnoo, wins his heat -8.20secs- and qualifies for the final. As we moved into the afternoon,Lucy McGlynn in a closely fought U12 60m final – time 9.19secs finishes 2nd behind Rachael Callery, Glaslough Harriers , and is the first Tir Chonaill athlete to climb onto the victory podium. Rian O’Murchu,9.47secs/ 4th, Amie Elliott, 9.23secs/ 6th and Iarla O’Murchu. 8.18secs / 5th – outstanding performances in very competitive finals. Track competition now moved into the middle distance disciplines. Large entries dictated that time trials were held with the fastest times determining final placings. Emer O’Brien, from Ballintra, won her heat of the GU12 600m and an excellent overall 4th place finish. Maebh Neill, Killybegs,8th, Albha McCrossan, Ardara, and Sean Doherty also gave good performances. In the U13 age groups Savanna Timoney, Ballintra, Maria Bonner, Fntown, Christopher Mulligan, Killybegs and Lee McCabe, Binbane, all were happy with their performances. In the U14 and U15 – 800m events Laoise McGonagle, Portnoo, 8th, Eoin Sharkey, Ardara,10th and Declan Sharkey U15/7th gave battling performances. Late in the afternoon Kate mcGowan, U19,Donegal Town, in her first attempt over 400m won in a good time of 59.14secs ahead of clubmate Eva McMullin, Ballyshannon. Christpher O’Loughlan,U19,Doorin, finished 4th in the 400mIn the field events -Shot Putt U12- three club athletes, Johnnie McGonagle, Liam Gallagher and Liam Roarty took the premier placings while Ellen Canavan, 5th and Niamh Mohan, 7th were also impressive. In the Girls U18 age group club mates Clara Herron,Grange, 10.77m took gold and Chloe Masterson, Donegal Town, 3rd. In the Long Jump discipline the following had top ten finishes -Rian OMurchu U12, Christopher Mulligan, U13/4th, Eoin Sharkey, U14 and Declan Sharkey, U15 SundayIn the first field event on Sunday morning Niamh Mohan, Frosses, surprised herself in winning the U12 Long Jump with Maebh Neill filling 8th position. Caolan O’Callaghan, Donegal Town, with a PB of 1.81m/High Jump/U19 was an impresssive winner. Later he followed up with a win in the Triple Jump/12.68m. Amy Elliott, finishes just outside the medals in the U13/Long Jump while Laoise McGonagle, Derbhla Neill and Amy McCullagh had top ten finishes in the U13 Girls Shot. Diarmuid O’Donnell. Mountcharles, 2nd Shot/U13 and Iarla O’Murchu, 3rd/Shot U15 with Lisa Adair,Cassie Brennan, both Ardara and Tess Duke Donegal Town all filled top ten places and a most successsful weekend for the throwers.On the track Eva McMullin wins the U19/200m while Chloe Masterson finishes 3rd in her heat of the U18/200m. The climax of the two day meet was the relays. Tir Chonaill had four teams entered and came away with a victory in the G12 /4 x 100m, a third in the BU12/ 4x100m and 4th place finishes in the GU13/4X100m and GU14/ 4 x 200m. Congratulations to all club competitors and a sincere thank you to club coaches and supporters for their invaluable leadership over the weekend.Men qualify for National Indoor League finalThe clubs men’s squad make club history on Saturday next when they contest the National Indoor League final in Athlone. Following two qualification rounds they now enter an eight team final that includes Clonliffe, Tallaght, Leevale, Le Cheile, Raheny, Dooneen, Tullamore, Tir Chonaill.Best of luck to all – the first team from the club and N West to gain a place in this prestigious final.We wish them well.‘Snog and Jog’ 5k in Ballyshannon As a lead in to the CARA BUNDORAN CHALLENGE 2015 Tir Chonaill AC will organise two 5k’s – Jog and Snog 5k in Ballyshannon on Sat 14th Feb -11.30am start and ‘The March Hare’ 5k on Sun. 1st March 11.30 start. The Ballyshannon 5k route is recognised as one of the fastest courses in the North West – the finish is 100metres lower than the start. Proceeds from this event will go towards Ronald McDonald House Crumlin – a charity that currently is supporting a number of Tir Chonaill AC members families at a most difficult time. Dates for your diary whether you are a walker, belong to a Couch to 5k, fit4life, meet and train groups.Club Couch to 5kThe new years Couch to 5k and fit4life programmes are drawing huge crowds to training in Donegal Town, Ballyshannon and Glenties The C25k groups meet at 7pm on Wed and Fri evenings at the Abbey Voc School, Track and Mall Track Ballyshannon on Wed and Fri evening at 7pm and on Sunday mornings at 9am.
