ICC is expected to tell Pakistan that they will not be returning to England next season, as a sequel to allegations of spot-fixing controversy, media reports said on Sunday.According to The Sunday Telegraph, England was going to be Pakistan’s second home as long as the security situation in their country was desperate. The Pakistan-Australia Test series held this summer was intended to be the first of several neutral series staged here. But at the ICC chief executives meet in Cape Town on Monday, the ECB CEO David Collier is not going to offer Pakistan the same facilities for 2011, as a consequence of the recent decline in the tourists’ popularity.Earlier this year the ECB had hoped that Pakistan would play India in England next summer, which would have been a real money-spinner as the two countries meet so seldom and have such large and passionate following. But such fixtures are neither possible nor desirable after three Pakistan players — Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir — were suspended by the ICC while they are being investigated by Metropolitan Police.According to the report, there is a small window for a one-day series between Sri Lanka — the other country to tour England next season — and Pakistan to be staged in this country in July. But disappointing attendances for many of Pakistan’s games this summer, and the controversy involving the tainted trio, with the possibility of more charges to follow, have led to the official change of attitude towards Pakistan’s future.advertisement
One year ago at the Asian Championships in Zhuhai, China, when flyweight Indian boxer Mayengbam Suranjoy clinched the title, he ended India’s 15-year long gold drought. This time around, when the Manipuri will step into the ring to begin his Asian Games campaign against Chatchai Butdee of Thailand at the Foshan Gymnasium in Guangzhou on Tuesday, he will be the best bet for India to help them end their 12-yearlong gold-less run at the Asiad Games.Digko Singh was the last Indian to win a gold at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games. Now, as Suranjoy bids for the gold, his claim doesn’t look unrealistic. The 24-year-old boxer has clinched seven gold medals, including one at the recent Commonwealth Games, since March 2009 and is a clear favourite against Butdee whose claim to fame is reaching the quarter-finals of the World Championships last year and a gold at the South East Asian Games in Laos, also last year. The Thai is no threat to the mighty Indian, who is known for his electric moves and reflexes in the ring. But, at the same time, no Thai boxer can be taken lightly as the country is known to churn out the world and Olympic champions. On the other hand, Suranjoy is also fancied for the gold and he has the skills to emerge triumphant even against the best in Asia. His swiftness inside the ring often induces his opponents to commit mistakes. Unlike many Indian boxers, Suranjoy throws four-five punches in one burst and has better chances to log good scores.advertisementEven an ardent fan outside Thailand would know little about Butdee and at 25, he is known as the upcoming boxer. So, Tuesday clash against Suranjoy will be a test of quest for success for Butdee.
Congress women’s wing would stage a demonstration here in the first week of July to protest against sudden spurt in crime against women in Uttar Pradesh, UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi on Tuesday said.”It has been decided that the party’s women wing will stage a massive demonstration in the state capital in the first week of July and in the meantime protests will be held in all the districts this week,” Joshi said.Accusing the state Women Commission of working as a BSP agent, Joshi demanded that it should be dissolved immediately.”Is the commission silent because its chairperson is a relative of a prominent BSP leader. What action has the body taken in the recent cases of rapes and atrocities against women?” she questioned.Joshi said that the recent cases have proved that law and order situation has hit rock bottom in the state.”The government and its leadership is turning out to be a blot on the state. Such a government has no right to continue in the power even for a second,” she said. The UPCC president alleged that “there could be nothing more shameful than spurt in cases of atrocities against women during the tenure of a woman chief minister.”- With PTI inputsFor more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) will stick with a 12-team format for the World Twenty20 championship despite complaints from the associate members and will push to ensure all national boards hold free and open elections before the next annual meeting.ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat on Thursday said a scaled back T20 championship format was necessary in 2012 for “balance” after cricket’s international governing body rescinded its earlier decision to reduce the size of the next 50-over World Cup.During the five-day annual conference in Hong Kong, the ICC reversed its decision to limit the 2015 World Cup to only the 10 full members and reinstated the 14-team format used at this year’s event won by India. But in turn, it cut back numbers at next year’s World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka from a planned 16 to 12, meaning only two associates will qualify. The 50- over World Cup will be trimmed to 10 teams in 2019.”We had to take this decision to make sure we retained the balance between the 2015 World Cup and the 2012 World Twenty20,” Lorgat said. The duration of the World Cup tournament has been heavily criticised but the decision to overhaul the system and cut the number of participating teams was met with strong opposition from the secondtier countries. Now, the Associate members have vowed to continue fighting for more participation in the shortest form of the international game. “The associates have resolved to press the ICC for more places at the 2012 ICC World Twenty20. We are unhappy. They give with one hand and take from the other,” said John Cribbin, Hong Kong Cricket Association secretary, who represents the associate members on the ICC chief executives committee.advertisement”We will challenge that decision, we won’t sit back,” added Cassim Suleiman, chief executive of the Africa Cricket Association.”It’s about giving opportunity to everyone and globalising the game.”Among the other decisions taken at the annual conference: the 2019 World Cup will be scaled back to 10 teams with the top eight places awarded to the top-ranked teams and the last two places going to qualifiers; the Umpire Decision Review System (DRS) will be mandatory in all Tests and limitedovers internationale, with some modifications to the existing usage.
Skipper Sunil Chhetri led by example scoring twice while Syed Rahim Nabi found the target once, as India posted a convincing 3-0 win over Maldives for their second victory in the Nehru Cup football tournament, in New Delhi on Saturday.Chhetri struck at the stroke of half time (45+2) before striking again on the 70th with a diving header, while Nabi found the target in between when he scored in the 53rd minute at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, which recorded a decent turnout.Chhetri found the net after Mohamed Sifan was called for handling the ball that was delivered by Nabi from the left. The prolific striker converted from the spot without any difficulty, for his second goal in the ongoing edition of the tournament.Nabi doubled the lead when he headed in a Clifford Miranda corner to put the hosts in the driver’s seat and, on course for a third title on the trot after triumphs in 2007 and 2009 at the Ambedkar stadium, and second here after the SAFF Cup win in December.India’s show of dominance did not end there as Chhetri headed in a Frances Fernandes cross to make it 3-0.Despite being coached by a Dutchman, to say Indian football and total football in same breath is a bit more than odd.The Indians, though, gave enough indications that the team was headed in the right direction.Adaptability has been the buzzword in recent times, and the likes of Syed Rahim Nabi, Sanju Pradhan and Chhetri were at the forefront when it came to showing the world that this Indian team is fast employing the new style of play designed by Koevermans.advertisementIf Nabi, as he always has been, industrious on the left, Pradhan, playing in only his second international match, gave glimpses of what he is capable of.
